Louis Pasteur School

Some architectures assert themselves, others fade away. And then there are those that wait, as if they have always been there. The new Louis Pasteur School, set at the edge of the park, is neither inside nor outside. It occupies the threshold. It does not claim to define the truth of the place. It allows itself to be merely a whisper, at the edge of play, at the edge of meaning. And it is in this half-light, this moment before the bell, this rustle between two laughs, that a child, perhaps, begins to understand the world.

The school’s entrance, its courtyards, passageways, vegetated alcoves, and integrated benches form threshold spaces, neither completely inside nor completely outside, where children, parents, and teachers can meet and interact. These micro-spaces contribute to building a sense of belonging. The threshold, as a lived space, embodies a gradual approach to welcoming, especially for the youngest children, who are often seeking reference points and security.

The landscape project fully embraces this vision, proposing a new identity for the school, notably through the creation of an Oasis courtyard integrated into the new building. The future courtyard will be directly connected to the park to the north, thereby reinforcing ecological continuity and contributing to the enrichment of the territory’s green network.

The presence of layered vegetation—trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants—will promote biodiversity and provide a diverse and resilient natural environment. The proposed forecourt will echo the forms of the building and incorporate permeable materials, in harmony with the surrounding landscape.

Through this transformation, Louis Pasteur School goes beyond its role as an educational institution: it becomes a structuring element of the town center, serving both the community and the urban environment.
