Located south of Carentan, within the Carentan–Saint-Lô–Périers triangle, the Sensitive Natural Area (Espace Naturel Sensible in french) of the Auxais Marsh lies in the Taute Valley. The pre-emption zone established under the ENS policy covers 44 hectares, including 22.4 hectares owned by the département.

Bound to the north by the Méreau stream, to the south by the Taute River, and to the east by the Bucaille stream, this floodplain sits on modern peaty alluvium. Upon these soils has developed a mosaic of closely interwoven wetland habitats: purple moor-grass meadows, mown or grazed mesophilic wet grasslands, rush-dominated meadows, willow thickets, tall-herb communities, and wet fallows.

The Auxais Marsh is one of the most important biodiversity sites within the Cotentin and Bessin marshes, particularly for birds and flora, as evidenced by its multiple national and EU-level designations: ZNIEFF (zone naturelle d’intérêt écologique, faunistique et floristique in french) Type 1 “Marais de la Taute et du Lozon”; ZNIEFF Type 2 “Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin”; SPA “Basses Vallées du Cotentin et Baie des Veys”; and the Natura 2000 site “Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin – Baie des Veys.”
The lookout offers visitors an elevated, privileged viewpoint overlooking the Auxais Sensitive Natural Area. Designed according to the planned site layout, it unfolds as an elegant wooden structure, harmoniously combining framing, decking, and guardrails.

From its base to its highest point, the lookout consists of:
- a steps inviting visitors upward;
- an observation platform, an open promontory over the landscape;
- guardrails providing safety while preserving the structure’s lightness.
The lookout blends discreetly into the marsh landscape. Its light and reversible presence supports discovery without disturbing ecological balances. It becomes an interpretive tool, encouraging visitors to observe the richness of wetland environments, seasonal variations, and the wildlife that inhabits them. More than a simple high point, the Auxais Marsh lookout embodies the commitment to enhancing the Sensitive Natural Area through a gentle, educational approach fully rooted in the identity of the territory.
